THE San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags finally put a stop to three years of losing to the San Beda College Red Lions as they upset the three-time defending champions, 83-77, in their game yesterday, in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Stags have not beaten the Red Lions in seven straight games, but all that bad luck was shattered by the sweet shooting Jimbo Aquino, who scattered five three-pointers in the final canto, including three in succession to turn a 62-68 deficit into a 71-70 lead.
San Sebastian continued to fight on even as Elvin Jake Pascual tied the count at 73-all with two free-throws, behind Jonathan Semira and forward Gilbert Bulawan, who combined for five straight points to give the Stags a 78-73 lead with a little over two minutes left in the game.
San Beda razed the tags’ lead to a single point, 77-78 after a lay-up by Bam Gamalinda and a putback by 6-foot-8 rookie center Sudan Daniel with 1:25 left.
However, Aquino, who has been battling a stomach virus all week long, canned the last of his six trifectas to give them an 81-77 lead. Aquino wound up with 26 points.
The Stags also got 18 points from 6-foot-6 center Ian Sangalang and 10 from Bulawan as they soar to a 2-0 mark.
The Red Lions were led by Gamalinda's 16 points and the 13 points apiece by Daniel and Garvo Lanete. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio |
