Tornado destroys houses in Samar

Tacloban City—A tornado hit four fishing villages in Can-avid town, Eastern Samar on Tuesday, damaging 26 houses and affecting over 800 individuals, a local official said yesterday.

The tornado hit the villages of Rawis, Carolina and Malago Tuesday afternoon at the height of tropical storm “Feria,” said Can-avid Mayor Norman Germino in a telephone interview yesterday.

Germino also said that the tornado resulted in the injury of six persons from the affected villages and damage to several schoolrooms at the Can-avid Central School, Can-avid National High School and at the Eastern Samar State University Can-avid campus.

Germino said that the tornado hit the town around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday and destroyed 20 houses in Rawis, 3 houses in Carolina and 3 more in Malago, mostly made of light materials.

The tornado also damaged the roofs of 3 schoolrooms of the Can-avid National High School, 4 schoolrooms of the central school and 4 rooms at the ESSU satellite campus.

Germino said they have yet to estimate the cost of damage.

He also said that they did not have the names of the six persons who were injured during the tornado.

Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Eastern Visayas reported that five fishermen were reported missing.

OCD Eastern Visayas regional director Angel Gaviola said two of the fishermen came from Hernani, Eastern Samar, two from Guiuan, Eastern Samar and one from Malitbog, Leyte

On the other hand, two fishermen were rescued in barangay Bantigue, Isabel town in Leyte yesterday morning.

The two rescued fishermen were identified as Wilmo Cantilan of Bogo City, Cebu and Justino Munda of Sabang, Malitbog town, Southern Leyte.

Rene Moshe Amano of the OCD-8 said Cantilan was rescued at around 8 a.m. yesterday while Munda was rescued two hours later.

Over 1,000 passengers bound for Luzon and Metro Manila were stranded at the two ports in Northern Samar, 768 in Look port, Allen and 260 at the Dapdap port in San Isidro. /Inquirer
