CEBU CITY, Philippines – One week after Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal left for Manila to undergo a series of tests, his office did not issue any medical bulletin concerning his checkup though they said his condition was not serious.Monsignor Achilles Dakay, Archdiocesan media liaison officer, assured that the 77-year-old prelate will return to Cebu City in time for the weekend religious celebration at the Basilica del Sto. Niño. “I suppose,” Dakay said when asked if Vidal would be in town this week for the Feast of the Sto. Niño celebrations. He said there was no change in the scheduled activities of the prelate who is suffering from osteoporosis with arthritis. Vidal has been suffering from pains in the back and neck. A source said Vidal's condition is manageable even though it may not be totally treatable. Dakay said the prelate can perform most of his duties but with restrictions. He has also been advised to take a two-week rest when he returns from Manila. Vidal plays a major role in the Triduum celebration this weekend since he is tasked to fetch the 400-year-old Sto. Niño image from its niche in the small chapel inside the Basilica del Sto. Niño. Following tradition, Vidal will place the image on the carosa before the start of the foot procession on January 17, Saturday, around the city. He is also expected to wait at the church for the return of the same carosa in order to get the image and replace it inside its urna or marble chapel inside the church. However, in recent years, Vidal would just hand over the image to the incumbent Basilica rector who in turn will take the narrow steel stairs to the top of the carosa. |
