THE COSTUMES of some contingents in this year's Sinulog grand parade on Jan. 18 may not be as glamorous as in previous years due to the global economic downturn, said event organizers.

But costumes have little to do with performance, which is expected to be better and livelier than last year’s Sinulog, said Dolores Suzara, project director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI).

Also, the local government units of provinces, cities and towns are very supportive of contingents that they send to the Sinulog, which encourages the performers to do even better, she said.

“We’re used to crises. Filipinos are very resilient. We can always cope when there’s a crisis. We’re creative that way,” Suzara said.

She said that there are many new, young choreographers who have shown considerable talent even with little training that could compete with veterans.

The new movements and steps these young choreographers bring to the Sinulog is sure to make to make the event better than last year’s, she said.

Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of SFI, said that he has witnessed some contingents practice their performances. Based on these practices, he said there were notable improvements based on their performances last year.
