The San Miguel Beermen completed the quarterfinal cast of the 2008 KFC Philippine Cup after they emerged from the sudden-death Sunday, with a convincing 105-86 win over the Air 21 Express in the final matchup of the wildcard phase at the Araneta Coliseum.

Asserting once again their mastery of the Express this season, the Beermen led most of the way and turned on the jets in the final canto to finally blow the game wide open, before cruising to the lopsided victory and ensuring their spot in the quarterfinals where they will be ranged against sister team and Fiesta Conference champions Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings in a best-of-three series.

The other quarterfinal pairing will see the upstart Rain or Shine Elasto Painters taking on the Sta. Lucia Realtors. The quarterfinal round will start on Wednesday.

Behind the inspired play of Olsen Racela and Danny Seigle, who put up 10 points in the first half, before getting sidelined because of an inch-long cut under his eye, the Beermen were able to zoom ahead by as many as 11 points and led by seven at the turn, 48-41.

The Beermen got significant contributions from Cebuano hotshot Dondon Hontiveros, Lordy Tugade and rookie Bonbon Custodio, who combined for 15 points in the third to bump the lead up to 11 entering the final stanza.

San Miguel dealt the Express the final death blow as they ran off seven straight points, capped off by a booming trifecta from Hontiveros to extend the lead to 18, 82-64.

Hontiveros and Tugade topscored for the Beermen with 18 points apiece. San Miguel is now 7-0 against the Express since 2006.
