A BAN on the delivery or transport of firecrackers and other pyrotechnics by public transport vehicles (PUVs) is being pushed in Cebu City in light of the Christmas and New Year holidays.Councilor Edgardo Labella said the ban aims to reinforce an existing city ordinance on the regulation and licensing of firecracker dealers. Under the proposed resolution, to be taken up on Wednesday, all passenger jeepneys and other PUVs are banned from transporting firecrackers within Cebu City. The ban aims to deter unlicensed wholesalers and retailers from selling firecrackers in the city's markets. Labella said that while firecrackers are part of the Filipino tradition of celebrating Christmas and New Year, unsafe use leads to injuries and death. PUVs transporting firecrackers place the safety of the riding public at risk. The resolution calls on the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to prohibit PUVs from transporting firecrackers in large quantities within the city especially during the holidays.
