CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu City officials viewed on Tuesday the results of a 2008 opinion poll on corruption as a call for the public to help fight corruption.

Acting Mayor Michael Rama said he was not surprised with the survey results and sees it as a challenge for city government officials and employees to do well.

The Social Weather Stations (SWS) corruption survey, which was released on Monday in Cebu City, showed that city and municipal governments got a “good” grade in terms of public perception of their sincerity to fight corruption.

However, public sector agencies did not do well in the poll.

"My answer to the SWS survey is leadership by example," Rama said.

He said the corrupt should be punished because "no one should be above the law."

Rama, who attended the launching of the Pasko sa V. Rama on Tuesday, assured that the survey results would not discourage potential investors of the South Road Properties (SRP).

The corruption survey rated half of 30 government agencies as “poor” to “very bad”. The lowest rating went to the Bureau of Customs, while the highest rating went to Filipino business associations.

City and municipal governments were given a good rating.

City Administrator Francisco Fernandez said he was sad about the survey results and that the city government would try harder to perform its functions well.

This is why the city government is making the bidding process of SRP as transparent as possible, he said.

He said he even wanted the press especially City Hall beat reporters present during the bidding.

The city government is still negotiating with the Filinvest Land Inc. for the sale and development of SRP lots.

Fernandez also appealed to Cebuanos to report any government employee who tries to commit graft and corruption. /Correspondent Jully Venus Cuizon
