MANILA, Philippines—The Filipino worker who allegedly went on a car rampage in Jeddah Tuesday could face the death penalty, an official of a Filipino expatriates group said.

“Failure to prove his insanity will lead him to beheading," Ronnie Abeto of the Pusong Mamon Task Force said in a text message.

This as the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that 33-year-old Rigor de Padua of Muntinlupa City "figured in a series of incidents in the early morning of 11 November in Jeddah highway that resulted in the death of three Saudi nationals and injuries to two others."

Citing reports from Philippine consul general in Jeddah Ezzedin Tago, acting Foreign Affairs Secretary Esteban Conejos said De Padua is now in the custody of Saudi police.

But Conejos said he could not say what penalty the Saudi court would impose on De Padua.

"We do not know yet," he said in an exchange of text messages.

Conejos said he instructed Tago "to see to it that full consular assistance is provided to De Padua, that his rights are respected and protected throughout the process to establish the facts of the case and to determine his culpability, if any."

When asked if De Padua indeed ran amuck, DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said, "That's a detail still to be determined."

According to news reports, De Padua went berserk after receiving a call from his girlfriend who told him she was leaving him. He allegedly commandeered a bus and ran around the city and slammed into at least four vehicles, killing three persons and injuring dozens.
