CEBU CITY, Philippines – The brains behind the most successful mass transport system in the world is scheduled to arrive in Cebu City on Monday to discuss with local officials the importance of effective mass transport in urban development.Enrique Peñalosa, former mayor of Bogotá, capital city of the Republic of Colombia, will highlight in particular the merits of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which Bogotá has refined. “If there is anybody who can share the advantage and disadvantage of having a BRT, it would be him,” said City Administrator Nigel Paul Villarete. Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier proposed BRT as a possible mode of mass transport in the city. Apart from discussing BRT, Peñalosa will also attend the Better Air Quality forum from November 12 to 14 with Villarete and Acting Mayor Michael Rama. He is also scheduled to meet with business leaders and officials of other local government units. Bogotá BRT system, TransMilenio is considered the world’s most successful mass transport system. His insight into BRT systems, as well as other programs he implemented during his term as mayor of Bogotá, is considered crucial in Cebu City’s possible implementation of these systems. |
