Timing versus speed

Six-division world champion Oscar De la Hoya has indicated that timing is the key to negate whatever speed advantage Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao has in their December 6 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya and four-time world champion Manny Pacquiao faced the Chicago media on Thursday at the top of the Sears Tower for their upcoming clash.

De La Hoya, according to Fightnews, spoke confidently as he addressed reporters at a roundtable discussion regarding his preparation and how he plans to come out victorious that night.

Timing, he says, is the key to eliminating speed. This, according to De la Hoya was taught to him by his former trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

“You can be the slowest fighter out there, but if you can time that punch coming in, you can be ten times faster,” De la Hoya said.

Oscar has tapped Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain, the legendary fight tactician from Mexico. The team will be heading out to Big Bear, California to continue training camp. This will be the first time that De la Hoya will train at Big Bear after seven years. He used to train in the area for such big fights against Julio Cesar Chavez, Fernando Vargas and Pernell Whitaker.

De la Hoya even had the time to quote his good friend Michael Jordan, who told him, “The day that you have nothing else to learn is when it is time to retire.”

De La Hoya explained that this advice was given to him prior to him fighting Chavez for the first time, in 1996.

“I am not done learning,” he says. “I am still progressing as a fighter.”

As for Pacquiao, De la Hoya said: “I think the win over David Diaz demonstrated to me that he is growing and he is progressing. I am not really sure what to expect.”
