CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Central Visayas (MGB-7) will start mapping Catmon town on Tuesday to determine the cause of the landslide in the mountain barangays (villages) of Cabunggaan and Panalipan.Roder de Dios, MGB-7 director, said Catmon will be included in their list for mapping this year and a meeting will be set up to discuss the matter. He said the landslide, which affected 38 households, may have been triggered by saturation of soil due to incessant rains. Catmon Mayor Estrella Areval advised the affected residents not to return to the area until the MGB has studied the place. “Delikado kung mag-estar sila didto. As of now, wala man sad hinuo'y nibalik (It's dangerous for them to go back. No one has returned yet as of now),” Areval said. The mayor estimated the damage on houses and crops to reach about P50,000. Although there were no reported casualties, Areval said she received a report that one of the residents was badly injured during the sudden movement of the soil last month. An old man injured his eyes after he fell and hit a huge rock when he panicked during the landslide. Areval said she could not locate him because most of the residents had relocated to their relatives in nearby barangays. The mayor said food assistance has been provided to the affected residents. Representatives Ramon “Red” Durano VI of Cebu 5th district earlier went to Catmon to check the affected areas. He told a news conference on Monday that he was willing to provide financial assistance such as the cost of construction materials as soon as he would receive the list of affected families from the mayor. /Reporter Hayde D.
