A former barangay councilor was arrested yesterday after police recovered several unlicensed firearms inside his house in barangay Banilad, Cebu City. The house of Anecito Ocampo at the Ouano compound was raided about 7 a.m. by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7). Police found a caliber 30 M2 carbine rifle, .45 Colt pistol, .9mm pistol, .22 caliber Winchester rifle, .357 revolver, magazines and assorted ammunitions. The .9mm pistol had an expired license. Ocampo served as a three-termer councilor in barangay Banilad before he lost in last year's barangay elections. According to Supt. Rex Derilo, the CIDG-7 received complaints that Ocampo was brandishing a .45 pistol in his residence. The police conducted a one-week surveillance then secured a search warrant from Regional Trial Court Judge Geraldine Faith Econg. The CIDG-7 raid was led by Supt. Derilo. Ocampo was at home during the raid. Ocampo said that only the .9mm and .45 pistols were seized inside his room and that other weapons were taken from other rooms of the house. Ocampo wouldn’t say who owned the guns. Ocampo is the father of Ronald Ocampo, who was accused of killing fireman Wenceslao “Jun” Opone on August last year. Ronald remains at large. The older Ocampo said he believed that the raid had something to do with the criminal case his son is facing. Police said the confiscated .45 pistol would undergo ballistic examination to determine whether it was the same gun used in the fatal shooting of Opone. Ocampo was detained at the CIDG-7 detention cell pending the filing of charges for illegal possession of firearms. Ocampo said he didn’t know his son's whereabouts. /CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON |
