CEBU SCHOOLS Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy and member schools Southwestern University (SWU) and the University of the Visayas (UV) were given the green light by the Cesafi Board to participate in the Asian University Basketball Championships slated next weekend at the Cebu Coliseum.Tiukinhoy was given the go-signal to act as commissioner of the tournament while the reigning National Students Basketball Championships titlists Cobras and the seven-time Cesafi champions Green Lancers were both cleared to participate, during the a Board meeting Thursday night at the Pino Restaurant in Lahug. The moves were all in compliance of a board resolution which supposes that Cesafi member teams may participate in non-sanctioned Cesafi tournaments so long as they ask permission from the Board and it is not in conflict with any Cesafi activity. Also in that said meeting, Cesafi's representative to the Board of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP), Atty. Baldomero Estenzo, also made his report regarding the proceedings of the national congress, which was held last June 12 at the Dusit Hotel in Makati. After the report, the Cesafi Board decided to draft a formal letter asking the secretariat of the country's basketball governing body for more documents in order to determine who the legitimate leader is. The Cesafi, which is an active member of the organization, has been left in a conundrum as to which president to follow, after the election of Manny V. Pangilinan and Prospero “Butch” Pichay. “We're under the BAP-SBP and we will follow that. That has never been in question. What we need answered is who the real president of the organization is. That's why we're asking for documents in order to study the merits of the legitimacy of the leadership,” said Tiukinhoy. Correspondent Jonas Panerio |
