DANANG, Vietnam — Kyle Emmanuel Ochoa and Prince Mark Aquino won gold medals in the 9th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships after ruling the rapid event to cap the Filipinos' impressive showing at the Danang Hotel.Ochoa, in just his first international competition, tied with Pham Ba and Tran Minh Thang of Vietnam and compatriot Haince Patrick de Leon with 5.5 points in the boys' Under-8 category. However, only Ochoa, Pham and Tran were awarded medals with superior tie break points. “Suwerte lamang po nanalo tayo sa tie break,” said Ochoa, predicted by NCFP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. as the country’s next grandmaster. Ochoa earlier bagged a silver medal in the Standard play and is looking for another golden finish in the Blitz event . Ochoa also won silver in the Team event along with De Leon and John Lemi with 14.5 points. Aquino, for his part, finished in a two-way tie for first with 5.5 points to also clinch the gold medal in the U-14 division and led two other Filipinos - Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Jan Nigel Galan to the team silver with 13.5 points. Garcia, also won a bronze in the individual play with 5.0 points. Ochoa and Aquino's feats brought the Filipinos' gold haul to 10 after four days of competition. The trip of the 40-member RP Team is bankrolled by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, headed by Rep. Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. National Master Edmundo Legaspi won gold in the Seniors division as well as Chardine Cheradee Camacho and Cherry Ann Mejia in the Girls U-14. Samantha Glo Revita also bagged the gold in the Girls' 10-and-under. Richielieu Salcedo of Cagayan de Oro City likewise bagged a gold in Standard play. |
