SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Advocates of the Filipino Veterans Equity Act are in a last ditch effort to get Filipino-Americans to unite and support the bill.On June 3, 2008, the US Congress is scheduled to vote on HR760/S1315 that incorporates the Filipino Veterans Equity Act. The bill has reached the House after several decades of lobbying to rescind the Rescission Act of 1946, which took away the veterans’ benefits. After the US Senate passed S1315 in a historic vote last April, the measure is now on its last leg before it goes to President George W. Bush for final approval. A call has been made for the support of all Filipino Americans to do their part in getting the bill approved in the House in the interest of justice and equity. Advocates request every Filipino-American to contact, call or email their respective congressmen, (find them at http://www.house.gov/) by June 2, 2008, to support the passage of HR760/S1315. Now in their 80s and 90s, only a few thousand World War II Filipino veterans are left to benefit from the benefits long due them. Advocates believe it is time these brave soldiers are treated as equals by their American comrades-in-arms and acknowledged by the American people. |
