MANILA, Philippines -- A 40-year-old South Korean has been barred from entering the Philippines after he attempted to bribe an immigration officer late last April.Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Marcelino Libanan also issued an order placing Lee Dong Woon on the immigration blacklist after receiving a report about the incident last April 27. Immigration officer Michael Dizon reported that Lee had told him that he intended to stay in the country until February 2009 because Hanjin Corp. allegedly hired him to work for the South Korean firm’s projects in the Philippines. Dizon then asked Lee to produce his work contract but the South Korean instead took out from his wallet an unspecified amount of money and offered it to the immigration officer. The immigration officer immediately reported the matter to his superior, Ferdinand Sampol, who then decided to issue an exclusion order against the passenger. “Immigration officers are firm and very courteous, in keeping with the Filipino tradition of hospitality,” Libanan said, but they would not tolerate corruption or behavior against the law or local mores. “Show discourtesy to the immigration officers, then expect not to be allowed entry into the country,” he warned. |
