SANTA CRUZ, Ilocos Sur, Philippines -- Arcelie Laoagan had wanted to bring her family of six to Canada and stay there for good.

But while working on her family's immigration papers, Laoagan, an accountant, was found dead on January 19 near a train station in Calgary, a city of Alberta, Canada.

She was the second overseas Filipino worker to have been murdered in Canada in three months. The first was Jocelyn Dulnuan, a native of Ifugao, who was killed in October last year.

A native of Naguilian, Isabela, Laoagan, 42, worked in Hong Kong as a domestic helper before she went to Canada.

"We were shocked. We never expected it. We thought Canada is a safe place," said her husband, Gregorio Laoagan, Wednesday.

The Laoagan family lives in the village of Babayoan, five kilometers from the national highway here.

Gregorio, 43, said what broke his heart was the way his wife was killed. "My wife's face was said to be deformed and one of her eyes was removed," he said.

He said he received a call on Saturday from one of Arcelie's fellow boarders in Calgary, informing him that his wife was missing.

The caller told Gregorio that she tried contacting Arcelie's friends and three sisters, who are also staying in Canada but could not locate her.

Gregorio said the shocking news came in the afternoon of January 19 when Arcelie's Canada-based sisters called and told him that his wife had been found dead near the subway station.

He said they still do not know the details of her death, adding that his sisters-in-law have yet to see Arcelie's body.

Aside from Gregorio, Arcelie left behind five sons whose ages range from 8 to 19. Her body is expected to arrive in Manila on February 2.
