CLARK SPECIAL ECONOMIC--COMCLARK, the exclusive distributor of the Tropos systems in the Philippines, recently launched at the SM City Clark the first of its wi-fi (wireless fidelity) hotspots in the main district of this 4,500-hectare ecozone. The signal is beamed from the Tech Access, a business center at the mall, according to Dennis Uy, ComClark president and chief executive officer. Uy said this was part of the $2-million wireless broadband network being developed in Clark, which was part of the program to develop a cyber corridor in the country. Aside from Clark, the cyber corridor includes the cities of Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Manila. The project, called WAC or Wireless Anywhere Clark, is being undertaken with the state-owned Clark Development Corp. CDC president Antonio Ng said President Macapagal-Arroyo was informed of the project last month when she presided over the joint meeting of the Cabinet and regional development council. Ng said the project would be completed in four phases by June 2007. The first phase will cover the Clark main gate (where SM City Clark is located) down to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. The other phases extend to tourism establishments, all gates and traffic lights, commercial areas and industrial hubs. Uy said WAC's digital infrastructure would enable investors to conduct mobile commerce and visitors to have easy access to the Internet through their laptops, mobile phones and other wi-fi capable gadgets. He said the system would help Clark's traffic and security management division monitor activities on the road, in banks, power and water utilities through mobile computers relaying video feed from remote cameras linked to central monitoring stations.
