Filipina author in New York comes home

March 05, 2009

POWERBOOKS and People Ignite are proud to present, “Surreality: from dreaming the life to living the dream,” a workshop based on the widely-acclaimed book by award-winning author Carissa Villacorta.

Since its release in 2006, the book Surreality has reached and resonated with diverse readers who, just like its author, have a dream and the drive to make it real.

The Surreality Workshop, slated on March 7th, 2009, Saturday, at Enderun Colleges in Fort Bonifacio, hopes to bring in a fresh batch of dreamers whom Carissa can meet and mentor. It will coincide with the release of the second edition of Surreality, to be sold by Powerbooks and signed by author onsite.

Villacorta made a name for herself, and for Filipinos in general, when she became the first Filipino author to launch at a Borders bookstore, the largest book retailer in the world, with 1,200 branches across the US, Europe and Asia. Villacorta had among the biggest book signing events ever at Borders’ flagship store on Park Avenue and 57th Street in New York.

A year later, she was named one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the United States at age 28. In late 2008, she was invited by Enderun Colleges, an esteemed academic institution in Manila, to guest lecture on Writing and Business Communications.

“Enderun is so honored to have award-winning author Ms Carissa Villacorta as one of our faculty members. The “Surreality Workshop” will be a rare opportunity for all to receive the tips and insights she has to share,” said Tricia Tensuan, Enderun Colleges’ VP for Marketing.

“This author exudes wisdom beyond her years, yet she maintains to be simple, real and approachable - just like her book. Just like your best friend.

Joining Carissa at the workshop will be Ni?a Terol and JV Wong, two other influential women who are making headlines of their own. Ni?a Terol is a political communicator and a writer for MEGA Magazine, Entrepreneur, and Cosmopolitan Magazines, among others. Guests will also hear the story of People Ignite Managing Director and Founder, JV Wong. People Ignite, the host of the “Surreality Workshop,” is an organizational development company that focuses on innovative and experiential training sessions.

“Nothing should stop you from living your dream. Whatever goals you have, there is always a path going there –and there are steps to take,” said Ms. Wong, who founded People Ignite, her dream company at age 28.

Powerbooks’ young and vibrant General Manager Gabby Lijauco added, “We are honored to partner with People Ignite for the Surreality workshop. We fully support their cause of educating people, especially the youth, to have a clear vision of their dream and move all odds to pursue it. Powerbooks believes that learning — whether from books or experience — can enable a person to achieve things that seem impossible at first.”

The power of influence should never be taken for granted. One can motivate thousands to work harder, reach higher and dream bigger. The bounds of inspiration know no limits, and no one understands this responsibility more than Carissa Villacorta.

“I realized that the thing I love to do the most is helping my friends make their things they only dream about their living reality,” said Carissa. “JV, Ni?a and I decided to create this workshop to replicate and duplicate the experiences we have amongst our friends – the generosity of sharing, encouraging, connecting and staying in touch.”

The “Surreality Workshop” will be held on March 7th, 2009, Saturday, 9am-5pm at Enderun Colleges on 1100 Park Avenue, McKinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City To sign up or for more information please visit www.peopleignite.com/surreality, email surreality@peopleignite.com or call 0922-848-1562.
