MANILA, Philippines—One of the alleged robbers who staged the brazen midday heist in a luxury watch shop in Makati City was a cousin of San Nicolas, Pangasinan Mayor Leoncio Saldivar III, the Philippine National Police disclosed Wednesday.
Director Eugene Martin, PNP intelligence chief, said the mayor’s father, Leoncio Saldivar Jr., admitted that Jay-ar Saldivar was his nephew.
Martin said Jay-ar was identified by arrested suspect Dennis Serquiña as among the 11 members of the Alvin Flores Group who took part in the audacious break-in in Greenbelt 5 mall on Oct. 11.
He said the information about Jay-ar’s connection with the robbery group was supported by another suspect, Warlito Rodriguito, who turned himself in to authorities on Monday.
Aside from admitting that they both worked as security escorts of Mayor Saldivar, Martin said Serquiña and Rodriguito confessed to being members of the syndicate named after its leader, Alvin Flores.
Martin said although the suspects’ link with the mayor was not enough to conclude that he financed the syndicate’s operations, the elected official should have detected his men’s criminal activities.
“Those men were under his employ. It’s very unthinkable for him to get the services of people he did not know,” he said.
