FFO FIELD DIRECTOR BRIDGES THE FIL-AM

January 08, 2009

January 7, 2008 - San Mateo, CA -- Katrina Romero, a community organizer and long-time democrat who also serves as the Field Director for Filipinos for Obama, is running for California Democratic Party State Assembly Delegate for San Mateo County (Assembly District 19). The Filipinos for Obama leadership committee fully endorses Katrina’s candidacy and is organizing locally to assist with the campaign, including encouraging voter turnout. Election day for Assembly District 19 is Sunday, January 11 in San Mateo. Filipinos for Obama held a phone bank tonight and called San Mateo county voters to introduce Katrina and her candidacy and remind them to vote on Sunday.

Katrina announced her candidacy last week as a “[dedicated] and [passionate]…field organizer” and a “young woman of color…excited to continue to build a bridge between historically underrepresented communities and the California Democratic Party,” she said in a statement on her Web site, www.katrinaromero.com. According to Katrina, her dedication to public service began during her studies at UC Berkeley and she has since worked with first-generation high school students, homeless communities, and disabled communities throughout the Bay Area as a community organizer.

In 2006, Katrina worked as a Volunteer Director for the California Democratic Party (CDP) Headquarters. She also served as a field director for the CDP and reached out to different community organizations, schools, and clubs to mobilize voters in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. More recently, as Field Director for Filipinos for Obama, Katrina recruited, trained, and managed hundreds of first-time volunteers to work for the Obama campaign and reach out to voters through registration drives, phone banking, and canvassing locally and in swing states. With her expertise and leadership, Filipinos for Obama was able to mobilize over 12,000 voters nationwide.

“Katrina and I worked side-by-side in this last presidential campaign for Obama,” said FFO Operations Director and San Mateo County resident, Virg Cristobal, “Katrina's strategy and leadership to especially reach out to underrepresented communities was the difference-maker in this last election… She is the new blood in our Democratic Party that we need.”

Unlike the recent presidential election, fewer people are aware of the California Democratic Party Assembly District delegate election, but California Democratic Delegates were integral to the historic 2008 campaign victory for President-Elect Barack Obama. In addition to attending the 2009 and 2010 California Democratic Party Conventions, delegates represent their community by helping to shape the Democratic platform, endorsing candidates, and serving as the backbone of Democratic support for the Obama-Biden Administration.

“As we saw in Obama's victory, real change happens when we have the tools and inspiration to organize and claim our piece of democracy,” Katrina said in her statement, “I am dedicated to making sure this widespread sense of ownership continues to reverberate throughout the Democratic Party…Our success as Democrats will not depend solely on our leaders, but also our ability to incorporate and empower people in our communities.”
