SAN PEDRO, Laguna – An old woman and a child died when a flash flood hit a village in Pagsanjan, Laguna, at the height of typhoon “Santi” early Saturday, police said.
Senior Inspector Luis Perez, Pagsanjan police chief, said in a phone interview that Margie Taino, 8, a special child, drowned in a sudden surge of water that swamped her house at around 4 a.m.
He said the victim's father and an older sibling attempted to save her but a concrete wall of the house collapsed, trapping the girl inside.
Perez said Julieta Zaguere, 79, also drowned in the flood inside her house where the water was chest-high.
He said Zaguere's family recovered her body at around 7 a.m.
Both deaths happened in Barangay (village) Sampaloc, where flood waters were starting to recede at noon Saturday.
