NAGA CITY Two persons died as typhoon Santi (international codename: Mirinae) pummeled Camarines Norte with high winds and strong rains Friday night, a disaster official said Saturday.
Jose Eboņa, 61, of Barangay (village) Awitan in Daet, Camarines Norte, died of hypothermia at the height of Santi's rampage in the northernmost Bicol province, said Arnel Ferrer of the provincial disaster coordinating council.
He said Eboņa was left behind at home when his family was forced to evacuate as the typhoon began pounding Daet at about 8 p.m.
Another casualty was confirmed in Barangay Mambalite.
"The barangay chair of Mambalite relayed to us that a boy died in their place, but we are yet to identify the victim," Ferrer said.
Ferrer said many were forced to evacuate in Daet as the typhoon roared across Luzon. About 500 persons remain in evacuation centers by mid-morning Saturday.
Meanwhile, a section of the Maharlika Highway in Labo, Camarines Norte, impassable, according to Carlos Galvez, town civil defense chief, "due to floods and landslides."
Five hundred families remain in evacuation center all over the town, added Galvez. No casualties were reported, however.
Galvez said the estimated damage to agriculture in Labo was P25 million, while damage to infrastructure was estimated at P15 million.
