About the “Harana” documentary film: The Harana documentary film explores the vanished custom of harana and its music through the eyes of classical guitarist Florante Aguilar. Born and raised in the Philippines, as a young boy in the province of Cavite, Florante heard music and mythical stories spoken by his elders. Now living in the US and championing Filipino music – Florante travels back to the home country to search for and rediscover the last surviving practitioners of a long lost art – before its complete demise.
Led by award winning, San Francisco director Benito Bautista, the film contains a treasure trove of beautiful Filipino music awaiting to be rediscovered. Intent on preserving vanishing customs, the film rekindles a connection with the past before it is irrevocably lost, and portrays a side of the Philippines rarely seen. Presenting the newest trailer of this documentary film will be its director, Benito Bautista, and producer, Fides Enriquez.
About Togonon Gallery: Togonon Gallery works with emerging and established West Coast and International artists. Many of our established artists were active in the major art movements of the twentieth century. Our emerging and mid-career artists investigate a myriad of styles and themes inspired by contemporary American and global life. Their work explores the politics of living in 21st century society, the point of intersection between the natural and industrialized worlds, aspects of transnational perspectives, the beauty found in the everyday, and the artistic process via diverse media. The gallery applauds the efforts of filmmakers to document the performing arts.
This event highlights the works of contemporary visual artists Ted Lincoln and Adrianne Watson currently on display at Togonon Gallery and features a wine reception and a private screening of the Harana documentary film trailer. Initially a representational painter, Lincoln changed to abstractions in 1999 when he learned the Sumi ink technique in China derived from the Pomo method, adapted by the monk Wong Mo during the T’iang Dynasty (618-906 AD). Showing a strong command of his process, Lincoln’s use of abstraction is a tool to comment on our substitution of technology for experiences of nature. Ted Lincoln obtained his BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. He lives and works in Florida.
