Underserved FilAm Students Lowell Bound

San Francisco - Sarah Ramos and Elaine Monzano two eight grade students attending West Bay’s after school mentorship program received the approval of the San Francisco Unified School District to attend Lowell High School. This public magnet school in San Francisco is the oldest and one of the most prestigious public high school west of the Mississippi in the continental U.S.

Lowell is a four year college preparatory high school of 2, 600 students. Admission is merit based and highly competitive. For fall of 2009, over 2600 students applied and only 650 were accepted and enrolled.

In 2008, Lowell was ranked #54 nationally in Newsweek’s Top 100 Schools, and #39 U.S. News and World Report's Best High Schools in America for 2009. Currently it is California’s #1 large urban high school, according to the CA Academic Performance Index.

The school accepted the two FilAm eight graders for their academic excellence and their ability to demonstrate and practice critical thinking skills.

Sarah and Elaine, both with a 4.0 GPA were recipients of The Wesby in 2007 and 2008. The Wesby is West Bay’s Oscar awarded to achievers from among the Filipino community’s underserved students for over all academic excellence.
