2 men nabbed in Tayabas linked to reb blasts

July 04, 2009

LUCENA CITY, Philippines — Police said they arrested two men suspected to be New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas involved in bombings.

The two were arrested in Tayabas, Quezon on Thursday, police said.

Senior Supt. Elmo Francis Sarona, Quezon police officer-in-charge, identified the alleged communist guerrillas as Emerson Cruzado, 34, of Gumaca, Quezon and Cesario Santonia, 41, of Lopez, Quezon.

Tayabas police and soldiers put the two under surveillance in the village of Ilayang Ipilan after receiving a tip.

The government agents saw four men carrying three bags about to board two motorcycles without license plates.

The men saw the lawmen and escaped in the motorcycles leaving behind their bags.

Two of the men—Cruzado and Santonia—were arrested after a chase, but the two other men were able to escape and were seen fleeing toward Mauban, Quezon.

Recovered from the three bags were an antipersonnel land mine; two hand grenades; two pieces of electrical blasting caps; electronic gadgets and equipment; and communist documents, according to a police report.

The NPA guerrillas, according to military reports, have been using improvised land mines in attacking businesses, mostly mobile phone facilities and construction companies to collect “revolutionary tax.”
