BACOLOD CITY -- A fisherman died Friday of "cardiogenic shock" after a jellyfish stung him in Barangay Tiling, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, a report from the Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office said.
Cardiogenic shock is a state in which a weakened heart could not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.
The provincial health office identified the victim as Emilio Lindayao, 40, a resident of Barangay Tiling.
Lindayao, accompanied by his brother, went for a swim in the sea when the jellyfish attacked him.
Police reports said Lindayao was declared dead on arrival at the Cauayan District Hospital.
More than 100 species of jellyfish are toxic to humans, and contact with toxic jellyfish causes a wide range of conditions, from skin rashes to cardiovascular and respiratory collapse, according to WebMD website (www.emedicine.com).
