MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has approved the appointment of Cristina Ponce Enrile, the socialite-wife of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, as ambassador to the Vatican, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Friday night.
Ermita said that Ms Enrile's appointment papers has not been issued yet but this will be done “in a matter of time.”
Ms Enrile was recommended by the Department of Foreign Affairs to the post, which was held only recently by Leonida Vera.
“She's earmarked to be appointed as Ambassador to the Vatican,” Ermita said of Enrile, a known patron of many charity organizations.
Ermita said that it was Ms Arroyo who told him this week about Ms Enrile's appointment.
Early on the day Friday Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye told reporters that he was aware of a DFA recommendation for Ms Enrile to take over the post.
