DAVAO CITY -- A policeman and a suspected New People’s Army rebel were killed in a shootout in the crowded town center of Monkayo in Compostela Valley on Monday night.
Monkayo town was celebrating its founding day when the incident happened.
Superintendent Belfor Causing, spokesperson of the police in Southern Mindanao, identified the slain policeman as SPO1 Danilo Barrette. Causing said Barrette was able to draw his gun and fire back at the suspected NPA rebel, Jeofrey Colinares.
A civilian, Anthony Israel, was hit and wounded by a stray bullet.
Causing said witnesses said Colinares had several companions who immediately left when the shootout began.
