PHILIPPINE National Police Chief Director General Oscar Calderon vowed Tuesday to keep an eye on retired police officials who will run for an elective post in the 2007 elections.
Should they win, Calderon said there would be no special treatment for his former colleagues.
"We will treat everyone equally," he said. "I will be checking them from time to time. We will not tolerate any wrongdoings."
Opposition Senator Panfilo Lacson on Monday announced his plan to run for mayor of Manila in the 2007 elections. At least five other retired police officers, including former Calabarzon Region police Chief Prospero Noble, have signified their intention to run in the May polls.
But Calderon believed former police officials have an edge in governance because they were trained to follow and implement rules.
"They know what’s wrong. So we expect that they will abide with the existing rules and regulations," Calderon said.
