The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars sustained their sizzling start as they blasted separate foes last Sunday in the Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) at the USJ-R-Basak gym.
The Cobras outlasted the Bohol Institute of Technology (BIT) Cruisers, 75-70, while the Jaguars dumped the Holy Name University (HNU) Falcons, 79-53.
Both the Jaguars and the Cobras improved to 2-0 (win-loss) to share the lead in bracket A.
The Cruisers and the Falcons dropped to 0-2.
Unlike in their easy 82-50 win over the Falcons last Sunday, the Cobras met tough resistance from the Cruisers, but Alfred Belandre scored crucial baskets in the stretch to seal SWU's five-point win.
Belandre led the Cobras with 14 points.
Ferdinand Lusdoc finished with a game-high 18 points for the Cruisers, who heavily felt the scoring woes of Ray Jackson Timtim.
Timtim struggled for only five points after exploding for 24 markers in BIT's previous outing.
On the other hand, Randy Pogoy was the lone double-digit scorer for the USJ-R with 10 points but eight other Jaguars scored at least six points.
