Mild quake shakes Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog

November 14, 2006

(UPDATE) A 4.4-MAGNITUDE earthquake shook the Philippine capital Tuesday but no damage or casualties were reported, an official of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

"We expect possible aftershocks but no damage," Renato Solidum, Phivolcs director, told GMA Network radio dzBB.

The quake was tectonic in origin, Solidum said.

He said the epicenter of the undersea quake was 61 kilometers (38 miles) northwest of Mamburao, the capital of Mindoro Occidental province, located 170 kilometers (106 miles) southwest of Manila.

The quake was felt at intensity 5 in Abra de Ilog, intensity 4 in Manila, and intensity 3 in the cities of Makati, Pasay, Tagaytay, Lipa, and Sta. Rosa, Solidum said in a text message to INQ7.net.

Intensity 2 was felt in the cities of Batangas and Antipolo and Cabuyao town in Laguna province, he added.

He also said that there was no danger of a tsunami.

The Philippine archipelago is located in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.

Although about 10 quakes hit the Philippines every day, few are felt. Only three major destructive tremors have been recorded in more than 30 years, according to Phivolcs.
