Dishonoring the legal profession

November 10, 2006

JUSTICE Secretary Raul Gonzalez has expressed sound judgment in one of his rare lucid intervals. An Inquirer report has quoted him saying there is need for "psychological and psychiatric tests as part of the requirements of a candidate for the position of Chief Justice," in apparent reference to Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

The senator may have the intellect, education and experience (among others) to qualify for the position, but she should be able to pass such medical tests.

I cannot reconcile myself with the thought that a legal luminary would stoop so low and play like a servile maidservant to her mistress and landlady in the Palace just to gain favor and "reap rewards," as the slogan in a Trump casino says.

The position of Chief Justice is the Mount Everest of the legal profession. Every lawyer worth his/her salt aspires to reach its peak.

But to act like Defensor-Santiago does by playing the "Inday" (not used as an endearing term here) as a way to reach the top is tasteless. It dishonors the profession.
